Qstream was honored recently to be recognized with a cash prize of €30,000 (approximately $34,700) as a runner-up in the Ascensia Diabetes Challenge, a global innovation competition focused on finding innovative digital solutions to support type 2 diabetes management. It's been an exciting journey and we’re delighted to contribute the prize money to Dr. Kerfoot, a Qstream founder and Harvard Medical School associate professor, to support the continuation of his groundbreaking research in brain science and behavior change.
Dr. Kerfoot and his team set out to develop a Qstream specific solution for diabetes management designed to help patients with type 2 diabetes better control their glucose levels. They created a diabetes-specific Qstream challenge to reinforce type 2 diabetes self-management education utilizing push notifications and game mechanics to generate strong patient engagement and improve outcomes. A recent clinical study found that type 2 diabetes patients who were randomly assigned to use Qstream had significantly greater reductions in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), a common measure of long-term blood glucose control, than their counterparts who received the identical content in a booklet format.
When Ascensia launched the diabetes challenge in late 2017, it received 116 submissions from entrepreneurs and start-ups around the world offering a range of digital solutions with the potential to revolutionize type 2 diabetes management.
Qstream was selected as one of six finalists by a panel consisting of external experts and members of the Ascensia Medical, R&D and Commercial teams.
On June 22nd, in conjunction with the American Diabetes Association's 78th Scientific Sessions in Orlando, Florida, Ascensia announced the winning solutions, and we are thrilled that the judges in this challenge recognized the value of Qstream’s proven ability to help people with type 2 diabetes better manage glucose levels. Qstream CEO, Rich Lanchantin, was on hand with the team from Ascensia and the other challenge winners in Orlando, where the prizes were officially awarded.
